Welcome!

On September 30, 2007, after much planning and help from our friends & family, we tied the knot in Traverse City, Michigan! (Fig. 1) So now we'll use this blog (set up for wedding planning) to chronicle our continuing adventures in Berkeley and beyond.

Valentine's day in the snow...

We spent our first married Valentine's Day getting our butts kicked snowboarding at Kirkwood Resort near Lake Tahoe! It was a beautiful, sunny day and a gorgeous drive up to the mountains. We are both feeling all of our 30 years, though.... it was a good thrashing, and when the wind picked up around 3 pm, we were happy to take the excuse to spend the rest of the afternoon chatting up the bartender while our more energetic friends bruised their bottoms on the black diamonds!

In the land of Gogol, zakusky, snow, and Lenin!

Dobre dzehn! Over the winter break, we embarked on a fabulous multi-purpose trip: Colette & I celebrated her graduation to professorship with a week exploring St. Petersburg & the Golden Ring, then Dave met us in Moscow and we all celebrated my 30th birthday, then Dave & I headed back west overland via Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Berlin on our "maxi-moon" adventure. We're just not the Caribbean honeymoon types!

The first photo shows the three of us cheerfully touristing around the Red Square (before we got hassled by the police over our dokumenty). The second photo is the evening of my birthday, toasting 30 with Baltika beer on the night train to Riga, Latvia. More fun photos of our trip through Russia and the Baltics are at http://picasaweb.google.com/julianefry/SelectedRussiaBalticsPhotos.

Happy New Year!

Fabulous friends!

We have great friends. Recently we celebrated Erin's birthday in Sonoma with a wonderful group of her family & friends, and had our "last laugh" at Colette's place in Berkeley, before she departs for her new job in Ft. Collins... a little documentation of good times is below.

Paisley Dillon showing me her wedding photos while Sara Furst feels like she's getting kicked out of the bachelor house.... Erin Huschke, Julie, and Kate Pankopf - Erin's b-day celebration in Healdsburg was part high school reunion!

Fun times at Chez Colette, as per usual, included a Worton Special drink, this time featuring whipped cream and "jimmies". Good times were had by all, and they guys got jiggy wit' it, while the ladies rocked out to Moxy Fruvous casettes....

The fabulous "mini-moon" roadtrip, Oct. 4-12, and the beginnings of married life!

After the wedding, we loaded up our new Volkswagen R32 and drove cross-country, via the Michigan upper peninsula, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, then into Canada to Winnipeg and across the Trans-Canada Highway via the Rockies to Kamloops, then down into Washington, Oregon, and back to Cali. It was a beautiful fall color tour, and we especially enjoyed Banff to Jasper, and a day off of driving to hike around Jasper National Park. Some photos of our adventure are posted here.

Since then, life has been completely crazy. We have been trying frantically to catch up on work since our wedding-related time off & distraction. Interspersed between work binges we attended our friends Christine and Robert's fabulous LA wedding on Oct. 13 and spent a lovely weekend with Wendy & Garrett; sold our Chevrolet Lola (to Dave Worton, so she's still in the family); Julie spent Oct. 22-24 in Washington DC talking climate change and renewable energy to policy people (and getting optimistic about how much climate solutions work is going on there these days!); we attended our heroic fire-escaping friends Erich and Kim's wedding in San Diego on Oct. 26; housesat a weekend for our friend Shuster to take care of his very happy dog Hannah; Dave finished a demo of his song written with Jay, "Strange Man," and posted it to their MySpace band page on Nov. 12; Julie headed back to DC to review science Nov. 12-14; and we've been trying to spend lots of time with our lovely friend Colette, who will be leaving for Colorado at the end of the year. Activities have included watching Dr. Zhivago and planning a trip to Russia, a Sharks hockey & hot tub night, and martinis & 007 after watching Clive Owen thwart the Spanish Armada at the Emeryville AMC. (photo at left above is at the end of that epic evening)

Life is good, but full! Now it's time for a productive 10 days of work, and then I'm off again to Germany for a science meeting on Nov. 26 ... phew! Happy Thanksgiving!

Saturday night!

Hi friends!
Just to get the ball rolling for Saturday night activities... one suggested nightspot I've heard about is The Loading Dock, at 205 Lake @ Cass,Traverse City Mi.49684. Phone is: 231-941-4422. www.theloadingdock.org A great microbrewery for dinner/drinks is North Peak Brewery, at 400 West Front Street, downtown Traverse City, 231-941-7325. www.northpeak.net
Another fabulous Michigan activity is mini-golf, and Pirate's Cove at 1710 U.S. 31 North, Traverse City MI 49684, 231-938-9599 (probably a drive, not a walk) is open 10 am - 11 pm every day!
Hope you find some fun stuff to do - more info will be in your hotel rooms. We can't wait!! Have fun - Michigan is gorgeous this time of year!!
We will call some of you after the rehearsal dinner on Sat. eve and try to catch up with you in T.C.!
Love, J+D

Look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Hello all,

Andy and I are looking forward to meeting all of Dave and Julie's friends and family and celebrating in MI! We arrive Friday at 6:40 pm from O'Hare and leave Monday at 12:19 pm. We're staying at the Bayshore (reservations under Heilshorn), and we're not renting a car. We're definitely up for Saturday evening activities.

Here are a couple of action shots of Dave and Julie at our wedding in Ohio a couple years ago. (Dave, I've decided not to post the dance troupe photos, because I think they might be more embarassing for me than you!)

Cheers,
Sarah
